Those wild and crazy bikers. Man oh man as you’ll see here for sure – they are just a picture of the wild & crazy, hog ridin’, long haired & tatooed, bar crawlin’, beer drinkin’, rowdy bunch that you’ve always envisioned ‘em to be.

Yeah — uh huh. :)

The Western New York Offroad Association (WYNOA) held its annual rider awards, and officer leadership voting recently at the Holiday Inn in Auburn, N.Y. Several hundred people were on hand throughout the course of the day with the youth awards and luncheon taking place midday, and the older / adult riders being recognized later in the evening over dinner and drinks.

My wife & I didn’t stick around for very long after the evenings festivities began as we had to get back home and take care of our three four legged “kids” who were in the house, plus my poor wife needed to get away after manning up the booth that we had occupied since 11:30'ish the morning of the banquet where we had the photo’s projecting on the screen. All in all though it appeared (to me) as though everyone was having a good time.

Everyone is for sure looking forward to the start of racing season for 2012 including yours truly!

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pro's and Con's of each of the purchase options:

The images you see here - are more or less proofs. They are all low quality and watermarked, and frequently nearly straight out of the camera with minor cropping applied as the only "touch up". Purchased images will of course get cleaned up and have the watermarking removed.

Prints - My printer is MPIX - they are a high profile, professional online print shop who do fantastic work. They will color correct and address any issues as they arise. They package and ship product right to your door via priority USPS mail. The metallic finish is awesome - if you decide to purchase prints, I highly recommend it. Pros - professionally printed, packaged and delivered right to your door - you don't have to do anything. Cons - shipping expenses.

Digital media - This is one of the most popular choices that customers opt for - you purchase a high quality, high resolution copy of the file(s) of a given image(s) for download to your computer. You then handle printing on your own. Pros - Inexpensive! Especially when you consider that you can get as many prints, in as many different sizes that you want made up. Cons - Not as convenient as delivery right to your door and the quality of printer maybe questionable. (drug stores, walmart, sams club, etc... )

'magine that -- snow on the ground in a winter series. Yeah - snow. Who-da-thunk-it?! :) The day started out a bit on the chilly side (as in single degree temps!) but quickly warmed up to a balmy high 20's, possibly even flirting with 30's. The sky was at times a brilliant blue but wind in the upper atmosphere kept a steady stream of wispy clouds moving across it -- not enough to block out the good light though.

The day did start out with the sad news that the local motor cycling community had lost one of its own with the passing of Dan Leonard.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pro's and Con's of each of the purchase options:

The images you see here - are more or less proofs.
17 Jan '12 | Valley vs SVE

Valley's JV (boys) won their game 54-51. Well done guys! ( I arrived late in the game and was only able to pull off a few keepers from this one )

Valley's varsity team took to the court for the evenings "main event" and treated the house to a good game. Readers digest - it was a closely contested event through all four periods of play, with each team exchanging the lead. SVE held a slim lead in the latter stages of the 4th but the Birdmen were able to get the ball through the basket just enough to take the game into overtime.

... and then they fell apart. :(

The OT period was only half the time that a normal period is (4 minutes as opposed to 8) and in very short order SVE sunk two balls to quickly jump out to a 4 point advantage. Valley, meanwhile, sort of "lost composure" and got a little overly fidgety - ball control went down the toilet. They also got themselves into a bit of foul trouble which had Panthers at the free throw line. Time was ticking away and so was the game for the Birdmen. Valley's Ryan Coleman (I think.... ?) was able to sink a 3 pointer during the latter stage of the OT period, but that was the only bucket that NV would get. SVE racked up 10 points by comparison which, in the end, had them winning 63-56.

All in all this was a good game though - well played guys! ( to both teams )

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pro's and Con's of each of the purchase options:

The images you see here - are more or less proofs.
The images contained in the gallery are some of my personal favorites. You may enjoy some of them too. This gallery will be growing over time . . .

I may or may not consider selling some of them too depending on . . . Are you the subject in the shot? A parent or relative of the subject? If a photo is not of a person, but an object, or place, then yes - I most likely would sell without hesitation. Just ask if interested.

-=- jd -=-

The temps were cool to downright cold all day and it was frequently snowing. While there was no real accumulation of the white stuff it did at least cover the ground and give it a “winter look”. The sky was a solid mass of heavy overcast dreariness that really did not lend itself to making cool photo’s. I typically shoot these things with multiple, off cam flashes but it was so damned cold out that I didn’t bother. Today just became a “keep the gloves on, use the one on cam flash (SB-800), and hey — lets make it slow shutter speeds day too and see if we can get some cool action looking, blurry, streaky shots…” day.

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pro's and Con's of each of the purchase options:

The images you see here - are more or less proofs.
Newark Valley hosted arch nemesis and cross county rival Waverly in a wrestling meet tonight in the Bird Cage. It was a closely contested match that literally came right down to the very last pairing of the evening. Valley was behind at the start, but with a pin for victory by senior Travis Phillips, Newark Valley managed to pull off the overall win for the night.

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

(drug stores, walmart, sams club, etc... )

( from my blog . . . )
++++++++++++++

(Port Crane, NY) So I’m hanging out at my house, snug and warm figuring on watching NFL football all day long when the phone rings. It’s my brother-on-law Todd and he’s like — “Hey man — they’re racing up @SDR today and I’m jonesin’ to inhale some sweet smelling fuel oil mix and maybe get splattered with some mud and muck? You game?” <grin>

Well . . . that’s not exactly how it went down but . . . lol! :) I did swing by Todd’s house to pick him up and off we went. With winter like temperatures finally making a showing in the area, it would prove to be a cool day for racing at the Square Deal Riders Motorcycle Club for the 3rd installment of this years winter series. Once again the skies were clear and sunny which did still draw a couple of hundred racers and spectators to the event. With the thermometer hovering down around the mid 20′s, (maybe making it into the low 30′s?) I opted to keep my gloves on for most of the day which did make operating the controls on the camera a bit of a challenge at times. I actually tripped the trigger more than I realized though and took 300′ish photo’s. We’ll see how many wind up as being keepers that I’ll post to the galleries. Check back from time to time over the next day or two – I should have them all posted up no later than Tues evening.

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pro's and Con's of each of the purchase options:

The images you see here - are more or less proofs.
I thought racing started @12:00. Apparently the little guys started @11:00 -- my bad. I caught the very tail end of the motorized micro's on two wheels... I'll try and get up to the track on time for the next event. I did shoot most of the big bikes and some of the big quads.

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pro's and Con's of each of the purchase options:

The images you see here - are more or less proofs.
. . . and they got spanked to. :( Aiy . . . sorry ladies! Newfields Wolverines came into the Birdhouse and essentially had their way against Valley's Lady Birds. It was not a pretty thing to watch.

I didn't get home from work early enough to make it for the JV game, and I'm still experimenting with lighting . . . not many grabs from this - a couple worked out pretty well though I think. {shrug shoulders}

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pro's and Con's of each of the purchase options:

The images you see here - are more or less proofs.

As mentioned from over on my blog (link here) I was late in getting to this race due to a blown tire on my car while headed to the race. That was a drag . . . but I was able to get the spare on and got there none-the-less. I missed some of the early races as a result, and only stuck around for the first few laps of the big quads later in the day as I had other commitments that I needed to attend to. I think that I managed to pull of some pretty decent shots and hope that you'll think so too. It's good to be back at the races again!! :)

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

(drug stores, walmart, sams club, etc... )

06 Nov - SUPER BOWL - Apalachin vs. Whitney Point 9&10 yr old (Killer B's!)

My new / current favorite pee wee football team to watch. A bunch of hooligans wearing the silver & black of the Raiders who are NOT, in any way shape of form, camera shy AND are (as mentioned in a previous article in here) a pretty darned good football team. This was the game that I was looking forward to and boy did they bring it too when it came time to put on a show. The Raiders won this one going away 33-19 in a pretty convincing win over an out matched opponent from Whitney Point. Whitney Point did play 'em tough though and had one, or maybe two ball carriers that were very quick who struck paydirt a few times to get them on the board. Overall though the Raiders D held 'em in check, and the O line just pounded the Eagles D which allowed Apalachin to score almost at will.

Anyway . . . great game guys!

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I was a little late in arriving to the game but had only missed a little bit of the 1st quarter. Not much had happened up to that point - I believe that Sus Valley had scored but ME was ready to strike back. And they did. Long story short - this was a relatively low scoring, defensive affair which, as it should be considering that it is the super bowl, turned out to be a close game. A stubborn Susquehanna Valley D would dig in at the very end of this one and take the title with a 13-12 win over ME.

Congrat's to both teams on a very successful season!!

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pro's and Con's of each of the purchase options:

The images you see here - are more or less proofs.
30 Oct - Apalachin Raiders vs. ME White @Apalachin (9-10 yr olds)

Now this was a fun atmosphere, game, fans, bunch of kids, etc... to be at and shoot. These people (all of 'em!) are serious about their football. I mean - they are into it! The team gets announced, they run out onto the field and crash through a paper banner that the cheerleaders are holding, they have this bad-ass Raider Nation tune cranking, the fans - a whole lot of 'em too! - are all cheering, air horns blaring... wahoo! About the only thing missing is the big leagues infamous "Black Hole" end zone . . . it's time to play some football and the silver and black are in the house!

This was the 2nd playoff game of the day that I was covering, and the one that I was looking forward too from previous experience at this field with the Cardinals. I had seen some of this pregame show before and it struck me as fun then - probably scares the hell outta the other team - especially the younger ones! The Raiders were hosting ME White and when it came time to play ball -- we had a good game on our hands. The game went into the halftime with the Raiders leading, but not by much. A couple of defensive missteps cost them and ME capitalized. The coaches spoke with the boys @halftime, pointed out some areas of play where they could try and improve their game, gave 'em "atta boys" for area's where they were playing well ("... and don't let up either - we still have another half to play!"). They sent their charges back to the field to resume play in the 2nd half and this game quickly turned into a game of domination for the Raiders. They controlled the ball, and the clock on O, and the D stepped up and very effectively shut down ME's O.

Apalachin's Raider Nation would take this one 25-12 in the end and earn the team a trip to the Super Bowl next week in Windsor. ( I may even go just 'cause this is such a fun team to watch... ) :)

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

(drug stores, walmart, sams club, etc... )

This was the game that I was only able to cover up to the half time mark as I had to be in Apalachin for the start of that game. When I left this game ME White had a three score point lead and it wasn't looking good for WP.
29 Oct - Varsity vs Greene @UE (Playoff Game)

For the 3rd year in a row Newark Valley's Varsity Squad made it into the post season. For the 1st time in the same number of years they were not able to take the division even though they still had a solid 5-2 record on regular season play. They would meet Greene in UE's Ty Cobb stadium as playoff games are traditionally held on neutral ground. Greene came into the game with the better record (undefeated) and as such got to claim the game title of "home team". Green would leave Ty Cobb stadium still undefeated at the end of the day as Valley's season came to an end. The Card's didn't go down with out a fight though and actually matched up to the Greene machine pretty well in the first half of the game. The two scores that Greene capitalized on were principally the result of mistakes by the Valley squad. Greene pretty much dominated the game in the 2nd and had real good production pounding the ball on the ground. Valley did have a drive that did light up the NV stands and really got everyone anticipating a score when "Rusty Hooks" Mason Shutts connected on a couple of really nice pass plays to Devlin Farr and another one to Austin Argente. At one point Valley drove down to the Greene 5 yard line looking for a first & goal. Greene's D turned into a wall. Try as the guys might (NV) they couldn't get by or through that wall and the ball wound up in Greens possession on downs. That was the closest that Valley would come to putting up any points in the game. Greene took this one 30-0.

This wraps up another fun year / season of covering football for the NV programs for me. As in past years it has been a lot of fun and filled with the usual ups & downs. It is always enjoyable building a repertoire with the team (players & coaches) as well as the families on the sidelines and in the stands. The team has a number of promising young guys who will hopefully wear the uniform next year in 2012 and do The Valley proud once again.

***** GO VALLEY!!!!! *****

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pro's and Con's of each of the purchase options:

The images you see here - are more or less proofs.
. . . and at long last the final game of the day, back @ME, would be the 9-10 yr old B's. This would turn out to be a hard fought, and good game that was played well on both sides of the ball, by both teams. Fortunately for the Cardinal faithful - the Valley Red & Black would come out on top with a solid victory! This was another good way to end off the season for the kids - great job guys!!

***** GO VALLEY!!!!! *****

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pro's and Con's of each of the purchase options:

The images you see here - are more or less proofs.

I arrived at this game late into the 3rd quarter on what turned out to be a dry (that was touch & go) evening in Maine to catch the latter portion of this game. I had been contacted via facebook by one of the girls volleyball players asking if I might come and shoot their game at the high school gym. I told her that I had already been mugged by a couple of these goons <grin> at the homecoming parade about this game. I also told the young lady from the volleyball team that *if* the weather was in fact horrible and crappy that I would shoot their volleyball game in the gym. As I left work I was pretty sure that I was going to the gym too - it was raining and not looking very promising.

* BUT . . . . * (lol!)

. . . as I drove west, leaving Binghamton and headed through Vestal, over the bridge into Endicott and headed north up 26 towards 38B, the rain actually began to subside. Lo & behold, it stopped altogether. Sorry ladies - I'm going to the football game!

Not very many here - again - late arrival and it got dark really quickly - the really overcast and threatening skies didn't help - but at least it did stay dry. Enjoy!

( Ladies -- play basketball and then in the spring, softball -- I'll get pics of you then for sure! :) )

The scheduling for this last Sunday's worth of games was kind of crazy and out of typical order. Two of the games were @ME's field wile the 3rd was up in Whitney Point. Naturally they couldn't have been sequential - the order was 7-8's @11:45 @ME, then the 11-12's @2:00'ish @Whitney Point, THEN back to ME for the 9&10 yr old B's. {sigh} lol!

So anyway -- off to Whitney Point I went and keeping an eye on the clock so as not to miss the "B" game back @ME - I only stuck around for this one through the first half. From what I understand the guys played their best game of the year. Way to guy guys!

***** GO VALLEY!!!!! *****

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

(drug stores, walmart, sams club, etc... )

Valley's Super Mighty Micro's put up one heck of a good game taking their end of the season show on the road to ME Gold. The little Birds jumped out to an early lead and then had to fight for their very lives to hold off a hard charging ME Gold squad who came back and very nearly took it in the end. Valley's D got pushed pretty hard and the game literally came down to a (near) goal line stand with ME desperate to score in the waning seconds of the game. Coach called his pint sized birds back into the huddle, they sharpened and honed their talons, then dug into the rain softened field as the Gold made one last push. When all was said and done, and the furious flutter of feathers settled down, there was but a single Gold ball carrier down on the ground, short of the goal, and a flock of victorious Cardinals flying overhead and headed for the sidelines!!

Valley's Super Mighty Micro's held their own in this one and took the win 13-12! Great way to end the season guys!!

***** GO VALLEY!!!!! *****

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pro's and Con's of each of the purchase options:

The images you see here - are more or less proofs.
22 Oct - Varsity vs Watkins Glen

The Watkins Glen Seneca’s rolled into the Valley to face the hosting NV Cardinals. Valley made ‘em regret the long’ish trip into town by thrashing them handily 47-14.

Valley was coming off of a tough defeat last week against arch nemesis Waverly and was looking for redemption. This was also homecoming weekend - this is a BIG deal here in the Valley. The Cardinals have established a bit of a theme in the three years that I've been shooting them - they DON'T lose on homecoming. They just don't and today would follow that same recipe, with an added pinch of pepper to spice it up a bit as, again, they had an axe to grind due to the loss from last week.

The Seneca's got 1st possession of the ball, but that didn't prove fruitful and Valley wound up with the ball. Valley scored in short order and before you knew it - a rout was in the making. It was 22-0 early in the 2nd quarter and this game was rapidly spinning out of control for Watkins Glen. Valley would put up 6 more points before the half was out and hit the locker room up 28-0.

Valley got 1st possession of the ball to start the 3rd quarter. It would be the single shortest possession of the game, and with dire consequences. Valley opened up it's assault on WG with an opening pass play that got picked. Ooooops. Three or four plays later the Seneca's would capitalize on that turnover and put some points up on the board. They would get the 2 point conversion making this a 28-8 game. Valley put another 6 up on the board shortly thereafter (thank you very much) effectively nullifying Glen's score. The 4th quarter would be similar except the Seneca's would not get the extra point settling for only 6 points. Likewise, Valley would score not once but TWICE driving more nails into the coffin, and wrapping this game up.

Larry Kasmarcik - He's still a sophmore. He keeps playing like this for the next two years (and potentially improving?!) -- The Birds have got a lethal weapon in their arsenal... :)

Big Man - Timmy Smith - also a strong hope for next year as he'll be a senior.

Dakota Bennett - boatloads of promise with him as he too will be a senior next year.

"Rusty Hooks" Mason Shutts - rifled a nice pass at one point in the game which found its target in the form of Trevor Hoffmier. Mason will be a senior next year too.

Outgoing senior, Austin Argente - big year last season - kind of quiet this past year. It was good to see him back in action galloping 18 yards into the end zone for a TD during the 2nd half of the game.

All in all, a well played game by the entire team both offensively and defensively. This was the last regular season game of the year and the Newark Valley Cardinals wind up with a 5-2 record on the season. The win today sets them on a collision course with Greene (?) next week in a playoff match that will be on the road - likely in Binghamton or UE. While there are a number of outgoing seniors from this years squad, the future does indeed look bright with a lot of talented juniors and younger players who will hopefully play again next year.

***** GO VALLEY!!!!! *****

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pro's and Con's of each of the purchase options:

The images you see here - are more or less proofs.
Some fun grabs from the little parade that starts down @the Trout Ponds park, wanders through some of the residential neighborhoods in between the park and the middle school, and ultimately finishes up at the middle school. This has been a yearly, nearly day long celebration prior to the homecoming Varsity football game held at the high school.

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pro's and Con's of each of the purchase options:

The images you see here - are more or less proofs.
Last game / weekend of the regular season. Oh what a season it has been too -- full of all sorts up & downs for Cardinal football players and families. The games today were @ME vs. their "white" squads and it would be only the Super Mighty Micro's and the 9-10 yr old B's.

Apparently the ME Super Mighty Micro's came into the season as a favorite for doing well and going far - I heard that they have met or even exceeded those expectations and have been very good this season. They certainly were good against our little Card's beating us handily 31-0. The kids did their best though and that's all that matters. Some of 'em even appeared to still be having fun - a plus!

Valley's B's played an exceptional game narrowly coming up short in a losing effort 14-13. Ohh..... so close! Notable in this game and getting the first JD Photography "Player of the Game" award ( :) ) was none other than the big man in the line, #77 Trentyn Rupert. He was on fire and easily had the best game he has had all year!

There are still some games left from what I hear - consolation games - Jamie will likely notify everyone as to who, where, and when they'll be.

***** GO VALLEY!!!!! *****

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pro's and Con's of each of the purchase options:

The images you see here - are more or less proofs. Especially when you consider that you can get as many prints, in as many different sizes that you want made up. Cons - Not as convenient as delivery right to your door and the quality of printer maybe questionable. (drug stores, walmart, sams club, etc... )

15 Oct - Varsity vs Waverly

Valley's Varsity Squad hosted cross county rival Waverly today @the Birdhouse on what could only be described as a bitter, blustery and biting day. It was Senior Day at the school as well so there was some pomp, fun and formalities to be dispatched with prior to the game getting under way. Once the game did get going it quickly became evident that this was going to be a sloppy, mistake filled affair with the refs getting in their fair share of a work out throwing flags. Both teams - O's & D's. That sloppiness kept the game relatively close through the first half with Waverly leading it 7-6 at the buzzer. The flags continued to fly through the 2nd half, although (now that I think about it -- not as much I don't think) but what did noticeably change was the "air" in the teams. Waverly was not so quietly growing in confidence, while Valley was in fact clamming up. Waverly scored, and then scored again. Valley still had plenty of time to get back into this game BUT they really had to dig and come up with something big but . . . the guys were beginning to unravel. Waverly scored yet a third time and now it was 28-6 late in the game. It was all but over for Valley's Birdmen - they were dejected, frustrated and just couldn't find any momentum. Waverly drove the final nail into the coffin to make it 35-6 and would go home winning this one convincingly. The old adage in football is "... on any given day... " and today was just that - the better team won - simple as that. Valley drops to 4-2 on the season. Hopefully the guys will quickly put this behind them so as to get back on track for the game against Watkins Glen next week.

***** GO VALLEY!!!!! *****

For those interested in purchasing photos - please read:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I had heard something about this event coming up and decided to stop by on my way home from work to check it out. The weather was miserable - steady drizzle to out & out rain, dark & dreary, 100% overcast sky, etc... I saran wrapped my flash to keep it as dry as possible, and kept the camera body & lens under wraps in a cloth also in a lame attempt to keep them dry too. I was able to pull off a few shots - couple of these not bad all things considered - but no really super nice ones. ( in my opinion anyway... ) It might be interesting to try and shoot one of these again - preferably in better weather & light. :)

13 Oct vs Horseheads

The Cardinals Modified team played well today vs. Horseheads in the rain and muck and won big time 26-6! I didn't even know that there was a game until late in the afternoon and as such didn't bring any of my usual gear with me to work. I had a camera handy - but that was it - just a body with a fixed focal length lens on it. ( I usually use an 80-200 or 70-300 mm zoom lens for games ). I wasn't able to get out of work as early as I had hoped to either so I didn't even get there until very near the end of the 3rd quarter anyway. But that was alright - the boys played well and I just made do with what I had - enjoy. :)
